V.90 Help: Browsers

The Web browser is an integral part of the Internet experience. It is the application that allows you to not only access web pages (the World Wide Web), but also e-mail and news services. Below are the most recent and stable version of both Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Communicator for either the Macintosh OS or Windows 9x/Me OS.

Internet Browsers :
Netscape Communicator 4.79 (Win)
Netscape Communicator 4.08 (Mac6800)
Netscape Communicator 4.79 (PowerPC)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (Win)
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac)

Clicking the links above will start the download/install of the browser.

Below is a list of common Internet issues and some suggestions on how to solve them:

Common Internet Issues & Solutions:
Issue: Resolution:
Can't get web pages or e-mail though dialed into your ISP. Here is Microsoft checklist for TCP/IP failures and DNS resolution issues for Windows 9x. The article also links to several other useful TCP/IP or WSOCK32.DLL fixes. TCP/IP commonly causes the inability to get web pages and e-mail though online. If that article fails to fix the issue try this.
Where can I find support/help sites for Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000? Please read MVP Eshelman's site for help with Microsoft products. MVP Hardmeier also offers excellent support for Internet Explorer products. There are several excellent tutorial sites to familiarize new users with Windows 9x/ME.:

Also, some other browser troubleshooting links are: WOL Online Support Page, DejaNews.com, Microsoft Support Knowledge Database, Maximum PC, MacAddict, Maximum PDA, Symantec Antivirus Center, McAfee Virus Research Center, Windows Update, CERT Security Coordination Center, Netscape Technical Support Page, Netscape Tech Support Contact Info, and download.com.
After downloading a web accelerator program you can't get web pages. First make sure that proxies haven't been enabled (In Internet Explorer go to: Tools--> Internet Options--> Connections --> Settings and uncheck "Use proxy server". If that isn't the case your TCP/IP could be damage. Info on this issue can be found here. Some web acclerator programs actually damage the registry in Windows. If such is the issue the easiest way to solve the issue would be to reinstall your OS.
I installed AOL and now I can dial into my local ISP to get web pages. There have been several well document reports (including Maximum PC's) that describe how AOL version 5 and 6 can, in some instances (usually Windows 95A PCs), ruin the TCP/IP stack and corrupt data flow. AOL claims this is not a program bug or a dOs attack, but that customers are choosing to make AOL their only (default)ISP in the AOL set up.

AOL has offered a fix as follows (recieved from a manager at AOL Tech Support):

  1. Have the customer dial up AOL using the 1-800-#.
  2. Once logged on to the main screen in keyword type "Step 5".
  3. A file will be presented to them. They must download that file and save it to disk.
  4. The customer must run the file and install it.
--If any problems occur the customer must contact AOL Tech Support.

or

Something that has worked for me on some occasions:

  1. Remove DUN and reboot.
  2. Add DUN and reboot.
  3. Remove ALL Network Protocols.
  4. Add Client For Microsoft Networks.
  5. If Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP aren't installed... add them.
  6. Set Primary Logon to: Windows Log on.
  7. Click OK and reboot when prompted. If prompted to enter identification; first go to the identification tab and name the PC. Then click OK again... reboot when prompted.

--This has fixed about 50% of TCP/IP failures we have run into.

There was also talk at some point about certain techs that clicking "Reset Internet Settings" in Internet Options several times and rebooting would help. I have never had this method work for me, but about 10% of cases were solved with this method. As always, this is an AOL/Windows issue; so if worse comes to worse... contact AOL or system vendor.

Use Microsoft Outlook Express to gain access to your Hotmail Account.

Microsoft Outlook Express/Outlook:
Issue: Resolution:
Outlook Express won't run when I double click on it. The Windows Registry is corrupted. First remove Outlook Express, then delete the registry key: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities", and finally reinstall Outlook Express.

NOTE: If you are using Windows XP and the Outlook Express 6 that came preinstalled with it you can't remove Outlook Express as it is built into Windows XP itself. Windows XP user should this following procedure to fix this issue: Exit out of Outlook Express (if you are in it). Go to Start--> Run and type "regedt32" and click "OK". In the registry find the key following key:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Identities"
Select the aforementioned key and delete it. Then exit out of the registry editor. Launch Outlook Express and you will be prompted to re-setup your mail account. Once the account is setup you can then create new identities with no problem.
Problems with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. Program glitches/bugs, operating system issues, and conflitcting programs can cause these issues.

To fix this error:

  1. Go into Outlook Express.
  2. Click Tools on the top menu bar.
  3. Go to Empty Cache.
  4. Select Empty Entire Cache.
  5. Click Yes.
Can I remove the "Provided by..." in the Outlook Express toolbar? Find the following registry key with regedit:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\
Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0
Highlight the sub-key value called "WindowTitle". Editing this key's value will allow you to put whatever you want in the title bar. Removing it clears the bar. More info can be found here.
Why does only the time show on my messages in my e-mail? The e-mail application displays the date/time differently depending on how old the messages are. If the messages are less than one day old you'll only see the time listed. If the messages are between one day and one week old you'll see the day and time. If the messages are over one week old you'll see month, day, year and time listed. As the messages "age" they will display full dates automatically.
Outlook Express won't remember the e-mail password though the option to do so is checked. This is a registry issue. See Microsoft Article Q216382 here.
After installing/upgrading to Windows XP Outlook Express keeps prompting you for your password and when you choose to save the password it forgets it the next time the application opens.

This is caused by a damaged Registry key. To Remove the broken Key in Windows XP do the following:

  1. Click Start--> Run and then type "regedt32" in the Open box.
  2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider
  3. Right click on the "Protected Storage System Provider" key and left-click on "Permissions".
  4. In the "Permissions for Protected Storage System Provider" dialog box click the "Advanced" button. On the new window make sure that all the users have "Full Control Access" excpet for "RESTRICTED", they'll have "Read". Deselect "Inherit from Parent..." check box and if prompted click the "Copy" in the dialog box. Select the "Replace permission entries..." checkbox and if prompted click "Yes".
  5. Click the "OK" button twice to return the registry editor.
  6. Repeat Steps 3-5 for each "S-###" subkey that is listed under the Protected Storage System Provider registry key; otherwise, you may receive the following error message when you try to delete the Protected Storage System Provider key in the next step:
Registry editor could not delete the key currently selected. The key or one of its
subkeys does not give you delete access.
  7. Right click on the "Protected Storage System Provider" key and left click on "Delete". If you worried about doing such, you can first export a copy of this key, and then delete the key. To export the key, right click the "Protected Storage System Provider key" and select "Export".
  8. When you click Delete, you receive the following message:
Registry editor will delete the currently selected key and all its subkeys. Do you want to continue
    the operation?
    Click "Yes" to finish
  9. Start Outlook Express. When Outlook Express checks your mail account(s) you will be able to re-enter your password(s). This process repopulates the Protected Storage System Provider registry key with the correct information for that computer's SID. NOTE: Instead of just being prompted for the password you may have to reset up your mail account. Do so as you normally would via your ISP's directions.
Netscape Navigator/Communicator:
Issue: Resolution:
What happened to Netscape's Knowledge Base? Netscape pulled that feature, but guess what? It's still there, but you have to know the address. Here it is. Ther search page is here.
Is there any issues with early S3 video chipsets and Netscape? Yes. Update your drivers in order to resolve this issue.
Netscape Navigator v2/3 immediately states "Document: Done" in the status bar, but no web page shows up. When you have installed and uninstalled a download resuming program such as Freeloader, GetRight, etc... and the uninstall has left references to the program in the registry this issue can occur. If you can retrieve e-mail, then this is most likely the problem. The way to fix it is:

Go to Start-->Run

Type in "regedit" and click "OK". This will open up the Registry Editor.

On the left hand side navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Protocols by clicking on the +'s.

On the right hand side, look for "ftp" and "http" keys. If the data for these keys refer to a third party program such as GetRight or Freeloader, then highlight ftp and http and delete them.

Exit the Registry Editor.

What should I do if I am getting "Abnormal Termination" errors? If you get a dialog box during the browsing of web pages that points to the Abnormal Program Termination, and you cannot get back into the browser after that, this means that some critical browser configuration files have become corrupted

For Communicator 4.x, create a new profile. This will take care of the problem and Communicator will work. See the following article for instructions: SmartUpdate, JAR failed. security check -8156

For Navigator 3.x on Windows 3.1 - in File Manager, go to the directory where Navigator is installed, find the netscape.ini file, rename it to netscape.old and restart Navigator. Be aware that you will have to re-enter all your preferences.

Netscape has more info on this subject here.

Why is the mail server (SMTP) field grayed out even when I create a new profile? Netscape describes a fix for this issue here.
Why does it say "There are open modem connections, would you like to close them now?" everytime I exit Netscape? Click "Start"-->"Run". Type in "regedit" and click "OK".

HKey_Current_User--> Software--> Netscape--> NetscapeNavigator--> Automation Shutdown.

Delete the string Value "(NNPE.SHUTDOWN.1)".

If you want to have it prompt you ever again to disconnect everytime go to the same registry spot, click "edit", choose new string valu, eand enter the key value "(NNPE.SHUTDOWN.1)."
Known Netscape Issues:
  1. Sometimes, Netscape (all current versions) will not totally shut down. It will appears that it closes normally, but it will actually still be running in background. This causes the next instance of Netscape to misbehave. It may not respond properly if you click on a links or downloads may not work. E-mail won't work and definitely won't allow you to switch to another profile. To get it to work properly, you have to stop the background application and the only way to stop it is to use the task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del keys) and end the task or reboot. Either method always solves this problem.
  2. Sometimes Netscape will not install all components properly. This is most commonly seen in the Java component, but I have seen it not work properly in other compnents (i.e. FTP). This is the result of a bad intall. Netscape has no reason why it installs incorrectly, but the only way to fix this problem is an uninstall, delete any remaining Netscape files on the hard drive, and reinstall. All versions must be deleted to insure a proper install. There is no other way out. Typical error is "error opening JAVA jar" message.
Mac Netscape constantly crashing.
  1. While not online, but in Netscape clear the cache:

In Navigator, click on "Options"--> "Network Preferances". Click on the "Cache" tab. Click "Clear Disk Cache Now".

In Communicator, click "Edit"--> "Preferences". Click the "+" next to "Mail and Newsgroups" so it becomes a "-". Select "Cache". Click "Clear Disk Cache Now" on the right hand side of the window.
  2. Exit Netscape.
  3. Search for the file "ccache log" and move it to the trash.
Problems after installing the older Netscape Communicator 4.7.

If you are a Windows user and (a) intend to download Netscape Communicator 4.7 or (b) already have downloaded 4.7 and are experiencing problems, please read on. If you are not experiencing any problems, there is no need to take any action at this time.

If you don't know how to perform the steps outlined below, please try downloading the latest version found at the top of this page.

To ensure that Netscape Communicator 4.7 works properly, you must remove your "FullSoft" directory.

To do this, follow these steps:

Delete the following directory "FullSoft" located under: C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\FullSoft

That's all there is to it. You may now launch Netscape Communicator 4.7.

Netscape lists more info here.

About 2/3 through installation of the Navigator Personal Edition on
Windows 95 an "Unable to create RNA phonebook entry" error occurs.
To fix the problem, add Dialup networking support through the Add/Remove programs Control panel of Windows 95. Then reinstall Personal Edition.
About 60% through installation of the Navigator Personal Edition the installation fails. Copy disk1 to disk5 from 32bit folder from the Netscape CD to the hard drive. Start Windows 9x in safe mode. You may recieve a corrupted registry message and restore from a backup; then it should reboot fine. Reboot again to come up with Windows 9x in "Safe mode". Execute "setup.exe" from the "disk1" folder created earlier from CD. Installation should work fine. No reason found for this problem.
Netscape browser crashes on my Macintosh with Error 2. On the Macintosh, error 2 means that the application ran out of memory. Try allocating more memory to the Netscape browser. Find the Netscape application on your hard drive. Click on the Netscape application icon once to highlight it, select on the menu bar File--> GetInfo--> Memory and allocate at least 10MB minimum and 20MB preferred. Playing video in a browser requires a lot of resources as it pushes the envelope of what browsers are supposed to do. More memory can only help.
When I launch Netscape Communicator Messenger it brings up a web page first. Why?

Netscape has made a change in the way it displays their news updates when you open up Messenger to a pop-up. The following procedure will fix this issue:

  1. Exit completely out of all Netscape applications.
  2. Use "My computer" to get to C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\{User Profile Name}
  3. Copy the file prefs.js to back it up.
  4. Use Notepad to open the original prefs.js.
  5. Add the line:
    user_pref("mailnews.start_page.enabled", false);
  6. Save the file and exit out of Notepad.
  7. The pop-up should no longer appear.
Errors in Navigator:

Can't find msvcrt.dll

or

msvcirt.dll is missing
Reinstalling won't help, and this file doesn't appear on your system.

This happens because many newer programs are installing a newer MSVCRT40.DLL (Microsoft Visual C Run-Time library, version 4) file which requires MSVCRT.DLL for support. The problem comes when they uninstall that file, and they are left with a useless MSVCRT40.DLL.

The solution is to find the MSVCRT40.DLL that's in your c:\windows\system directory. Rename it and reinstall Navigator.
Netscape 6.x
When I open Netscape Mail it says there are messages in my Inbox, but nothing appears in the window that lists the e-mail. Use the Windows 9x/2000 Search or Find tool on the Start Menu to search for "*.msf". Go to "Edit"--> "Select All". Then "File"--> "Delete". Say "Yes" when asked to confirm the deletion of those files. Empty your "Recycling Bin" and reboot the computer. This should solve the issue. It is due to corporate mail index files.
