Broadband is becoming a
more prevalent ISP service. Some examples of broadband are: ADSL, SDSL, HDSL,
Cable, Wireless, and Satellite. It has been our experience that DSL is superior
to other services due to its lack of latency (good for online games), consistent
speed, dedicated throughput, and security.
Below is a list of common questions asked about broadband (specifically DSL) and
some common issues you may run into:

| What modem/hardware
do you recommend for the Internet? |
It has been
our experience that the following hardware works best:
Ethernet Cards - (Internal) 3Com
HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet 10/100 PCI Adapter, and (External/USB) 3Com
HomeConnect Home Network Ethernet USB 10 Mbps Adapter.
DSL Routers w/Firewalls & NAT - EtherFast
4-Port Cable/DSL Router.
Software Firewalls - Zone
Alarm. |

| I've heard
rumors that Windows 9x is not configured for a broadband/DSL connection; is this
true or just a rumor? |
It is true
that the original limitations in Windows 9x in some instances of high speed transmission
could slow down a broadband/DSL connection rate. However, these settings are in
the hidden portion of Windows 9x called the registry that controls the OS. Changing
these setting could be detrimental to OS health and therefore we don't support
that sort of thing.
However, if you wish to proceed
at your own risk (and we do mean your own risk since this could totally ruin your
system) Cableboost
and Winboost
can adjust these settings. By the way: The most common reason for a slow DSL connection
is an incorrect name server address (DNS) in TCP/IP configuration. Check with
your DSL tech support information or call your local help desk to confirm those
settings. |
| What can make
my broadband connection go slower than promised? |
Make sure that
if your server uses assinged DNS addresses that they are correctly entered. Contact
your ISP for more info. |
